Urticaria (hives) and Angioedema (swelling) may appear as red, itchy bumps similar to mosquito bites that can vary in size and occur anywhere on the body. Individual hives usually fade over several hours and respond to treatment with antihistamines. Swelling may last for up to 24 hours and is often described as burning or painful. Most common are acute cases of hives, where the cause may be identified, such as a viral infection, medication, food, environmental exposure, or latex reaction. Chronic hives occur almost daily for months to years, and for these individuals trigger factors are not always found.
