Congestion, drainage, sore throat, headaches
Inflammation of the sinuses is usually caused by either infection or allergy. This results in nasal stuffiness, head congestion, drainage down the throat, and sore throat. Sinus headaches may also occur, with pressure around the eyes, cheeks, teeth, and bridge of the nose. Drainage is usually clear but occasionally discolored, even when there is allergy present. Persistent pressure-type headaches in the facial region associated with discolored nasal drainage indicate infection or allergy.
If there is temperature greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit or the pressure and drainage persist for more than ten days, antibiotics may be required. Most "head colds" are viral, in which case antibiotics are not helpful. Treatment consists of decongestants and irrigation to promote drainage of secretions, as well as the use of medications to assist the body in controlling inflammation. Identifying allergic triggers can be helpful.
