Recurrent Infections

The immune system is composed of a variety of cell types and proteins each with a special task aimed at recognizing foreign material such as bacteria and viruses. Sometimes the immune system goes into "overdrive" causing reactions against non-threatening allergens such as pollen, animal dander or mold. This results in allergy. When part of the immune system is either absent or its function is hampered, an immune deficiency disease may result. Fortunately, this is very rare. Patients with immune system disorders generally experience the same kinds of infections that other people get (ear infections, sinus infections and pneumonia), however their infections occur more frequently, and may be more severe with greater risk of complications.

Immune system problems can be challenging to identify. We perform a detailed history to understand whether you need an evaluation of your immune system, as early treatment may prevent complications. Evaluation generally consists of blood tests and may require booster vaccinations. Reassuring results are often found, and improved immunity may be gained as immunizations are frequently part of the evaluation.

If an immune system disorder is found, you will be counseled regarding treatment. The most common immunodeficiencies include Selective IgA Deficiency and Common Variable Immunodeficiency. A special focus on treating compounding conditions such as allergy may be very helpful. Many patients with immunodeficiency also suffer from environmental allergies which can contribute to infection susceptibility. Leading you to a more full life is our goal as we help minimize infections and speed recovery.
