Medications to avoid
prior to your first appointment

As part of your initial evaluation, your doctor may want to perform allergy testing. Since many medications may interfere with the results of your tests, we ask that you discontinue all allergy medications at least one week prior your appointment. Getting the most accurate results from your initial assessment is very important.

Discontinue all allergy medications (prescription and over-the-counter) at least 7 days prior to your appointment. These include over-the-counter Cold/Cough preparations, and antihistamine / decongestant combinations. Antihistamine nasal sprays (Astelin) should be stopped 2 weeks prior. Additional medications which may interfere with testing include: motion sickness / anti-nausea, anti-anxiety, anti-ulcer / antacids, antidepressants, and anti-psychotics. Please discuss these medications with your prescribing physician prior to stopping them. For a complete list or any questions regarding a specific medication you may be taking, please contact our office at 616-949-4840.

Medications you can continue: nasal sprays (except Astelin), Asthma inhalers, prednisone, decongestants alone (Sudafed, Entex.)
