Eczema

Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that often occurs in people with allergies. This condition typically starts in childhood. Symptoms include dry skin that itches and is often red. Symptoms may worsen with exposure to irritants (detergents), changes in temperature, and allergens.

Hydration is essential in treatment of eczema. Successful treatment relies on a dedicated commitment to routine daily bathing and moisturizing. An eczema care plan can include both topical and oral medications.

For infants and toddlers, moderate to severe eczema may indicate an underlying food allergy, even in the exclusively breast-fed infant. Identificaiton and removal of the food allergen generally improves skin condition. Children with significant eczema are at increased risk for developing other allergic diseases such as food allergy, environmental allergy and asthma.
