Cough is the most common respiratory symptom for patients seeking medical care. In the allergy office we often observe cough to be a symptom of uncontrolled allergies. Exposure to an allergen can produce mucus which drips slowly from your nose to the back of your throat. This is called post nasal drainage and acts to stimulate your cough reflex.

Cough can also be a symptom of asthma. For some children and adults, cough may be the only symptom of asthma. This cough pattern is unique, often worsening at night and occurring after exercise, in cold air, and lasting weeks following a respiratory tract infection.

Allergists are asthma specialists. We can help identify if there is an allergic or asthma component to your cough. As persistent cough is abnormal, it is important to discuss your cough with your doctor to outline a strategy to find the cause.
