Allergy drops are allergens administered under your tongue. The drops are prepared individually for you, based on your own allergies, and may include pollen, mold, dust mite, and/or animal dander. Allergy drops are administered daily at home. This allows the convenience of fewer office visits and the benefit of no needles, which is especially appealing for small children. There is also a reduced risk of severe reaction with allergy drops. Studies have shown that allergy drops provide approximately 60% improvement, whereas injections have an 80% improvement rate.
Either treatment is more effective than medications alone, which offer about 40% short-term improvement. This treatment has been used in Europe for years and is awaiting FDA approval in the United States. It is currently offered as an off-label alternative to allergy injections. Discuss with your allergist which treatment option is best for you.
